Latera Implant: A New Option for Nasal Obstruction

Latera Implant: A New Option for Nasal Obstruction

pentaMany of us take for granted the simple action of breathing. It’s something our bodies do every minute of the day without even having to think about it, starting with air freely flowing in through our noses to fill up our lungs, which then power our bodies for work and play. But for people suffering from nasal obstruction or nasal valve collapse, that simple act of breathing becomes a challenge.

Penta Facial Plastic Surgery is pleased to offer a new procedure, the Latera implant by Spirox, that can help improve nasal obstruction or nasal valve collapse, helping you breathe more freely and enjoy life at its fullest.

Nasal obstruction or nasal valve collapse occurs in the narrow part of the nose, which is already a small pathway, meaning any obstruction can limit airflow, making it difficult to breathe. A deviated septum is one cause of nasal valve obstruction. While some people are born with a deviated septum and don’t experience problems, others find that symptoms such as snoring or a feeling of congestion can become worse over time. A deviated septum can also occur after injury to the nose. Other causes of nasal valve collapse include trauma to the nose or rhinoplasty, which may result in inflammation or scar tissue.

The Latera implant supports the upper lateral cartilage, helping reduce nasal airway obstruction symptoms and allowing patients to breathe more freely. The procedure is done under local anesthesia, and the implant is inserted into the nasal side wall, where it then opens up to support the airway. The implant dissolves and is absorbed over 18 months.

Patients who have received the Latera implant showed improvements including reduced nasal congestion, less trouble breathing through the nose, improved ability to get air through the nose during exercise, and less trouble sleeping. According to the Nasal Obstruction Symptom Evaluation (NOSE) survey, 53 percent of patients experienced reduced nasal obstruction symptoms at one year after the procedure.

The ability to offer this implant not only ensures our rhinoplasty patients will have an even better experience immediately following surgery, but it also gives us another option to help people who may be suffering from nasal obstruction that inhibits quality of life.
