Nora Ephron said it best in her book I Feel Bad about My Neck, “Our faces are lies and our necks are the truth.”
When it comes to signs of aging, the neck is usually the first area to give away your age. This is for a number of reasons. First, we spend a lot of time focused on the skin on our face, slathering on moisturizer, sunscreen, anti-wrinkle cream and make up. But the neck is often ignored. Without the moisturizer and sunscreen the face gets, the skin on the neck is susceptible to the aging factors of sun exposure, which leads to wrinkles and leathery skin.
The neck is also affected in a large part by gravity. The neck’s muscles and skin are pulled down from the moment we’re born, and the effects of that gravitational pull become more visible once we hit our 40s and 50s.
Luckily, there are a few things you can do to slow down the signs of aging manifested in your neck area. First, start applying sunscreen to your neck every day, to prevent further sun damage. Moisturizers will also help with dry skin and wrinkles.
Another tip is to hold your smartphone or tablet at eye level. This helps keep muscles toned and avoids further exacerbation of the “turkey neck.” You can also try some neck exercises, such as neck stretches and head rotations, to improve the muscle tone.
Finally, if your skin is sagging and your neck gives away your age before your face does, you might be a good candidate for a neck lift, or rhytidectomy. This surgery consists of making small incisions behind the ears and under the chin, to remove excess fat, and then lift the skin up. Expect two to three weeks for recovery. As with any type of cosmetic surgery, making a change in your appearance can often go a long way toward improving self-esteem. But you also want to go into the surgery with realistic expectations.
